At a glance
RIS was founded in 1957 by the Redemptorist Fathers of Thailand, and the name says something about the school: Ruamrudee translates as 'Union of Hearts', a philosophy that runs through daily school life as visibly as the academic programme.
It is a Catholic school, explicitly faith-based, welcoming students of all religions and nationalities, but the values of service, compassion, and community are embedded rather than optional. Around 1,100 students on a 29-acre campus in Minburi, eastern Bangkok, from Pre-K through Grade 12.
The curriculum is American at its core, with a rare combination at secondary: students can choose from over 50 IB Diploma classes, 20 AP courses, or the IB Career-related Programme, one of the broadest exit pathway options of any school in Bangkok. IB results consistently sit above the global average. Boarding is available from Grade 7.
The school also operates a Ratchapruek Campus in Nonthaburi (opened 2019) and an Early Years Campus on Phraya Suren Road, both following the same RIS philosophy. The Minburi campus is on Ramkhamhaeng 184 Road in Minburi, eastern Bangkok, on the same road as LFIB and SISB. No BTS or MRT nearby; families drive or use the school bus.
From central Sukhumvit, budget 40 to 60 minutes in morning traffic. For families where a Catholic ethos, a genuine choice between IB and AP at secondary, and a school with nearly 70 years of history in Bangkok are the primary filters, RIS is one of the most complete packages in the city.

Everything parents need to know about RIS
RIS Ruamrudee International School is a Pre-K 2 to Grade 12 Catholic day and boarding school in the Min Buri district of eastern Bangkok, run by the Redemptorist Fathers of Thailand since 1957 and relocated to its current 29-acre campus in 1992. The academic spine is a modified American curriculum aligned to AERO standards, with Pre-K following a Reggio Emilia approach and high schoolers choosing among, or combining, 17 Advanced Placement classes and the IB Diploma Programme, drawing on 47 IB course offerings. That dual AP and IB option is uncommon in Thailand and lets students aim at American, British, or Thai university systems from the same building.
With roughly 1,011 students across all sections, it stays mid-sized rather than sprawling, and separate buildings divide early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school. Days run on a rotating block schedule with daily flex time for students to meet teachers, plus an Extended Day Program after the 2:40 dismissal. Class sizes sit near 22 in the upper grades and 12 to 14 in Pre-K, where each room has a teacher, an aide, and a nanny. The student mix is mostly Thai with American, Indian, Japanese, and Korean representation, and English Language Development runs from Kindergarten through Grade 12 using push-in, pull-out, and co-teaching models.
Learning Support and a school psychologist handle identified needs from Pre-K up. Concrete strengths include a 60-team athletics program whose Varsity squads play in 12 SEASAC tournaments, a Performing Arts Center, two libraries, an Olympic-size pool, makerspaces, and a robotics lab. Class of 2025 IB candidates averaged 34 points with a 97% pass rate. The trade-offs are mostly geographic. Min Buri sits about 22km from the expat-heavy Sukhumvit corridor, so bus commutes can run 60 to 90 minutes each way, which is why some families use the 60-student residence at Redeemer Hall.
The Catholic identity is genuine rather than nominal, with on-campus Mass and compulsory religion or values classes, something to weigh if that does not suit your family. Thai nationals form the largest group, so this is less of an expat bubble than newer city schools. RIS Ruamrudee International School fits families who want established American and IB pathways, a green suburban campus, and a values-driven community, and who can live with the distance or board to beat it.
