HEI Schools Bangkok Sukhumvit is the Thai flagship of a Finnish early education network co-founded by the University of Helsinki, and it is the only kindergarten in Bangkok built specifically around Finland's globally recognised early childhood model.
Opened in 2021, it welcomes children aged 1.5 to 6 years, with curriculum and pedagogy designed around Phenomenon-Based Education: play-based, curiosity-led learning where children explore real-world themes rather than fixed subjects, supported by ongoing input from Finnish early years researchers. English is the primary language of instruction.
The HEI network has been recognised internationally, including the Hundred Innovation Awards in 2019 and 2020. The campus is at 32 Sukhumvit 36 in Klong Tan, Khlong Toei, a short ride from Thong Lo and Ekkamai BTS. A second, larger HEI campus in the Ekamai-Ramintra area is set to open for the academic year beginning September 2026, surrounded by over 3 rai of greenery, with a focus on nature and sustainability education and the same age range. For families specifically drawn to the Finnish early years model and the research backing it carries, HEI Sukhumvit is the only school of its kind in Bangkok. As with all kindergartens, plan the primary transition before enrolling.

HEI Schools Bangkok Sukhumvit represents a unique departure from traditional early childhood education systems in Thailand by adopting the highly acclaimed Finnish model. Developed in close academic collaboration with the University of Helsinki, the school implements the Finnish National Core Curriculum for Early Childhood Education and Care. This research-based methodology prioritizes the holistic development of the child, recognizing that physical health, socio-emotional stability, and cognitive exploration are deeply interconnected. By removing high-stakes competition, academic performance rankings, and formal testing from the learning environment, the campus fosters a deeply supportive space where young learners are free to try, fail, and explore without anxiety.
The primary objective is to cultivate intrinsic curiosity, critical thinking, and a resilient mindset, equipping students with the transversal competencies required for success in the twenty-first century. The school physical environment is custom-designed as a crucial component of the learning journey, functioning as a silent third educator that stimulates spatial and social skills.
Nestled in a leafy setting on Sukhumvit Soi 36 near the Thong Lo BTS station, the campus features purpose-built facilities that encourage sensory-rich exploration and physical development. Children have daily access to safe outdoor play areas, including a swimming pool, custom-made sandpits, water play areas, and a dedicated kids' garden. These facilities encourage cooperative play, physical coordination, and spatial awareness, allowing children to learn about nature, gravity, and physics through hands-on interactions. The architecture balances functional learning zones with quiet areas for rest and self-care, supporting the natural daily rhythms of active exploration and quiet reflection. Language acquisition and personalized care are central to the HEI experience, utilizing a rich English-speaking environment supported by bilingual programs in Thai and Mandarin.
Highly trained educators, possessing degrees in early education and extensive training in Finnish pedagogical methods, lead classes with favorable student-to-teacher ratios. Progress is monitored systematically through the Child's Learning Journey framework, which consists of collaborative individual plans, observational follow-up tools, and narrative portfolios. This personalized approach ensures that parents are active partners in their child's educational development. Upon completing their journey at HEI Schools Bangkok, children are exceptionally prepared for a smooth transition into both competitive international schools and local schools, equipped with strong pre-academic skills and a genuine love for learning.
